Experiences Leading to Leaves of Grass
- Whitman garnered much respect for his work from legendary novelists such as Langston Hughes, but his upbringing wasn't the easiest:
- One of nine children
- Forced to leave school behind at the age of 12 in order to help support his family.
- Began working for a Printing company, where he developed his passion for writing.
- At age 17, began a career as a teacher.
- Worked for a multitude of newspapers (The Long Island most notably) in New York before relocating to New Orleans to become a full-time journalist.
- While living in New Orleans, Whitman was exposed to the viciousness of slavery, in which case helped lead to Leaves of Grass.
