Experiences Leading to Leaves of Grass

Experiences Leading to Leaves of Grass
  •  Whitman garnered much respect for his work from legendary novelists such as Langston Hughes, but his upbringing wasn't the easiest:

    • One of nine children

    • Forced to leave school behind at the age of 12 in order to help support his family.

    • Began working for a Printing company, where he developed his passion for writing.

    • At age 17, began a career as a teacher.

    • Worked for a multitude of newspapers (The Long Island most notably) in New York before relocating to New Orleans to become a full-time journalist.

    • While living in New Orleans, Whitman was exposed to the viciousness of slavery, in which case helped lead to Leaves of Grass.
